Should I take the plunge?

I'm thinking about investing in a good quality camera. Right now I have my sights set on the Nikon D3100.I don't know anything about photography! But I know that I want to take some good quality pictures for my blog, my portfolio, my design school projects, etc.! I've also heard that the Canon Rebels are good...Do any of you have suggestions? It's a big purchase and I wanna make the right choice!
